Stephen Dantes, author, poet, teacher and graphic artistes, sees it fitting after his 10 year journey in the arts, to give St. Lucia his literary gifts on its thirty-fourth year anniversary of Independence.
After many a publication, 14 to be exact, in both print and digital, Dantes has created two poems and a St. Lucian comic strip to be launched for Independence day later this week.
The first gift, a poem ‘Fair Helen’ was written as a result of spending time out of his homeland and on returning, felt compelled to put pen to paper in appreciation of all he had missed about St. Lucia and was happy to enjoy once more. In his own words Dantes says “it’s a way of saying I love my country and it will always be the place I call home.”
The second gift, the poem ‘The Land, the Light and the Bottle’ written in humorous, colloquial language of St. Lucia, but dealing with a very serious problem in our society pertaining to our youth.
The third gift, is a comic strip with St. Lucia’s own super hero clad in the colours of the national flag with the emblem also, who fights crime on its streets. Four parts of this comic strip have been drawn, written and coloured so far. Stephen is asking for St. Lucian youth to name the Super Hero Character and the super powers that he should possess in a competition starting on Independence Day on his website www.stephendantes.net and his facebook page www.facebook.com/stephendantes
This competition which will be open to St. Lucian, youth ages 10 to 19 years and should act as a catalyst to inspire pride in our people. With their input, this will be a truly St. Lucian comic strip, from the names of the characters, the Kwéyòle language used, the St. Lucian expressions and incidents that nationals can identify with as well. All artwork is by the author and creator Stephen Dantes.
Stephen has been very busy at work as he is getting ready to release his novel ‘Is It Love?’ Pt. 2 and is preparing to go on his North America ‘Open Mic’ Tour in the Summer of 2013, on which he will hit several major cities in the United States and Canada.
